The way Warwick Davis played a vengeful leprechaun has become a legend. In the movie, the leprechaun is sure that a family has stolen his gold pot. He goes after them, using all of his smarts and strength. In the meantime, the family is looking for the gold very hard to make the leprechaun happy and keep him from hurting them. The basic premise of every Leprechaun film is this:
Dan O'Grady returns to North Dakota after kidnapping a leprechaun in Ireland in 1983. After burying the wealth, O'Grady discovers the leprechaun murdered his wife. O'Grady imprisons the leprechaun with a four-leaf clover. Stroke prevents him from burning him.
After ten years, J. D. Redding rents the O'Grady farmhouse for the summer with his daughter Tory, who is now a teenager. Contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their friend Ozzie Jones are helping to paint the farmhouse. When Ozzie is searching the basement, he hears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a child. He lets the leprechaun out of the box by taking the old four-leaf clover out. Ozzie finds out from the leprechaun that he is an Irish shoemaker who came to America to find his fortune. Ozzie fails to convince the others that he saw a leprechaun, so he sees a rainbow and follows it, hoping to find a pot of gold. Alex follows him because he's afraid Ozzie might hurt himself. A bag with 100 gold coins magically appears before Ozzie. They hide the gold in an old well after Ozzie checks it out and eats a coin by accident, thinking that this will heal Ozzie's brain.
J. D. gets tricked by the leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun's disguise as a cat, which causes him pain when he bites his hand. After Tory and the others take the leprechaun to the hospital, the leprechaun leaves on a tricycle. While Alex and Ozzie are checking the gold's purity in a pawn shop, the leprechaun kills the shopkeeper, Joe, for stealing his gold and then escapes after polishing Joe's shoes. A police officer pulls over the leprechaun on his way back to the farm because he is speeding in the go-kart he built for himself. The officer is pursued by the leprechaun into the woods, where the officer is shot and killed. After returning to the farm, the leprechaun begins searching for the pot of gold by polishing the shoes of each he encounters. Following their visit to the hospital, the group returns to the farmhouse. Nathan goes outdoors to check the looting and is injured by a bear trap placed by the leprechauns. In the open air, the mob swarms the leprechaun and beats him senseless with clubs and rocks.
When they uncover a pistol in the house, they shoot the leprechaun many times. They attempt to leave the property when it doesn't work, but the leprechaun has wrecked the truck's engine. After destroying the truck with the go-kart, the leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie reveals that he and Alex uncovered the pot of money. Tory retrieves the sack from the well and presents it to the leprechaun. They proceed to the hospital, certain that the worst is behind them. As he tallies his treasure, the leprechaun notices that he is missing the final coin that Ozzie ate. He confronts them, certain that they have fooled him, until Ozzie tells them that O'Grady has suffered a stroke and has been admitted to a nursing home. The group diverts the leprechaun's attention by flinging dirty shoes at him, and the leprechaun is forced to shine the shoes while Tory gets into her vehicle and speeds away. Tory travels to the home to learn how to kill the leprechaun.
The leprechaun poses as O'Grady at the nursing home. The leprechaun follows Tory to an elevator and, as Tory runs away, hurls O'Grady's bloody corpse down the elevator shaft. O'Grady warns her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which just so happens to grow in a large patch outside the farm, before passing away. Tory goes back to the farmhouse to look for a clover, but the leprechaun attacks and she is saved by Nathan and Ozzie. Alex uses a four-leaf clover that Tory discovered, attaches it to a wad of gum, and fires it into the leprechaun's mouth, causing him to melt away before he can murder Ozzie. Despite falling down the well, the leprechaun's skeleton gets out and declares, "I want my gold." After Nathan forces the leprechaun back into the well, he uses gasoline to ignite both objects. When the police show up, Tory is reunited with her father, marries Nathan, and they have a child. Several scenes had to be re-shot after the producers insisted that the film be made gorier to appeal to older audiences.
It is well knowledge that George Lucas was involved in the selection of Warwick Davis for the role of Willow. The explanation behind this, however, is not as well recognized. It would seem that Davis was bound by a contract with Lucas, and Lucas was required to grant his OK before Davis could feature in the film. As a consequence of this, he was recognized at the very end of the movie with a "special thanks" credit. Fans of horror films will find that the movie is much more intriguing when they learn this little-known truth. It's simply another illustration of how much of an impact George Lucas has had on popular culture.
Originally, the leprechaun was meant to flee back to Ireland. But there was one problem: the Irish actor who was portraying the leprechaun, Warwick Davis, did not have a work visa. In order to shoot the last sequence, Davis needed to secure a visa in only three days - an impossible job under normal circumstances. Fortunately, Vice President Dan Quayle's administration was able to speed up the procedure and Davis was able to complete shooting on time. For his services, Quayle earned a "special thanks" credit at the conclusion of the movie.
Warwick Davis was starting to regret creating the picture, but since Anniston's eventual success on TV, many people rented it, and it led to a lengthy series of sequels. It is reported that it was one of Warwick's particular favorites.
